Objective

Recently, research institutions in Japan have developed systems to ensure research integrity. However, although research integrity norms are common in general, judgments on what specific actions should be considered duplicate publication or inappropriate authorship may differ from field to field. In many cases, academic associations do not make specific guidelines for such activities. Since the boundary between improper conduct and responsible conduct is not clear, there is a possibility that the individual may commit research misconduct without being aware of it.

This project aims to clarify the research integrity norms in each research field and share them through research integrity education and training.

Outline

In this research and development project, we will (1) clarify the research integrity norms in each research field, focusing on duplicate submissions and inappropriate authorship, and (2) create educational materials that can be used for research integrity education and training.

To clarify the research integrity norms, we will collect and analyze the guidelines and related regulations issued by academic societies and journals in Japan and abroad and identify trends and commonalities among research fields. In addition, we will conduct interviews and questionnaire surveys of editorial board members of domestic journals, considering that research integrity norms are not always clearly defined in many research fields. We will analyze the results with surveys of related regulations to present specific research integrity norms in each research field.

Based on the above surveys, we will produce educational materials for use in research integrity education and training. The teaching materials will be in the form of leaflets with specific research integrity norms in each research field.
