JST’s Beijing Office and International Affairs jointly held a conference in Beijing on the 1st and 2nd of September, with the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) in the field of water pollution and its prevention. Japanese and Chinese researchers, whose projects were adopted for JST’s Strategic International Research Cooperative Program on "Science and Technology for Environmental Conservation and Construction of a Society with Less Environmental Burden" in FY 2012, made their presentations in this meeting. From the perspectives of "Science and Technology for Water Pollution Prevention", Japanese and Chinese research leaders introduced the latest outcome of their joint research, and the participants discussed water pollution issues as well as challenges in the areas for cooperation between the two countries.

Approximately 50 participants took part in the conference, exchanging various views on their activities and furthering their knowledge of the status of technologies for water pollution in both countries. Moreover, researchers discussed pressing issues facing both countries, practical application of their research outcome and the new cooperation with stakeholders in the research field at the panel discussion in which enterprises and nonprofit organizations enterprises also participated. The next day, Japanese and Chinese researchers visited an artificial lake in the suburbs of Beijing.

This conference also aimed at sharing the progress of Japan and China’s research projects between researchers of both countries. Through this meeting, JST and NSFC expect that Science and Technology Exchange between Japan and China will be further deepened.
