Message from Aizawa, Akiko FOREST Program Officer

FOREST Program Officer:Aizawa, Akiko(Professor / Director, Digital Content and Media Sciences Research Division, National Institute of Informatics)

This panel covers a broad spectrum of informatics—from information science and engineering, which underpin theory and foundations, to human informatics dealing with intelligent information processing and interaction, and further to applied and interdisciplinary domains.

With the rapid evolution and widespread adoption of AI, the very nature of science is on the verge of a fundamental transformation. As every stage of research—from idea generation and experimental design to data sharing—reaches a major turning point, we aim to create a venue where researchers can collectively reflect on and elevate one another while gaining a panoramic view of this “era of great transformation in science,” enabling us to thrive within it.

In the fast‑changing field of informatics in particular, looking seven years ahead and crafting a research plan worthy of dedicating one’s career to is far from easy. Precisely because of this uncertainty, deeply pursuing the academic foundations of informatics and cultivating the qualities that form one’s scholarly identity will become a driving force for the next generation of science.

Moreover, interdisciplinary integration among different academic domains is expected to accelerate further. Such “fusion of knowledge” cannot be achieved by individual effort alone. It requires spaces that foster empathy and mutual inspiration among researchers. The “Place of Fusion” planned and operated jointly by the advisors, external experts, and emerging researchers, offer opportunities to co‑create new knowledge beyond individual limits.

And we must not forget the element of “fun,” the true origin of science. The sense of excitement toward the unknown and the joy found in challenge provide the greatest energy to overcome difficult problems.

Networks formed with peers who share the same aspirations will undoubtedly become invaluable assets in the future. This panel is committed to fully supporting the activities of those who will shape the future of science.
