As long as retrovirus- or lentivirus-mediated gene transduction has been used to induce pluripotency in normal cells, chromosomal integration of the viral sequence may cause undesired positional effects such as oncogenicity, hindering clinical application of the iPS cells to regenerative medicine. The project aims at establishing a safe and efficient technology to generate iPS by means of nonviral procedures.
