Adherent cells exhibit unique directional motility induced by the elasticity gradient on a culture substrate surface, which is called “mechanotaxis”. This study aims to develop the nano/micro-systems to control the mechanotaxis, i.e., direction of cell movement and its localization on cell culture matrix, based on the precise designing of surface mechanical conditions of elasticity distribution. Applying the control of mechanotaxis with the well-designed mechanical extracellular milieu, the novel vectorial biomaterials to manipulate the cellular motility-related functional responses are tried to be established.
