JST is to fund one research project as part of the Collaboration Hubs
for International Research Program (CHIRP) 2015, within the framework of
the Strategic International Collaborative Research Program (SICORP)

On the 26th August 2015, Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) announced that they would commence support for a project on the topic of “Japan-ASEAN Science and Technology Innovation Platform: Promotion of Sustainable Development Research”. This support, within the framework of the Collaboration Hubs for International Research Program (CHIRP)*1, will be provided as an activity of JST’s FY2015 Strategic International Collaborative Research Program (SICORP)*2. The selected project is as follows:

“Japan-ASEAN Science and Technology Innovation Platform: Promotion of Sustainable Development Research”

Yasuyuki KONO, Professor, Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Kyoto University

This collaborative research project aims to contribute to Japan’s identifiable and sustainable development of science and technology innovation by leading research organizations in Japan and ASEAN countries by setting up a wide range of networking research hubs in Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia for international collaborative research. The outcomes of such research are intended to offer solutions to crucial contemporary issues across the ASEAN region and to be effectively and widely extended to as many ASEAN countries as possible within five years.

JST confirmed support to the one research project out of 18 proposals for the ASEAN region. Judgment is currently suspended regarding collaboration hubs in India, for which 10 proposals were received. Following comprehensive assessment by external experts on the basis of the program objectives and evaluation criteria, it was decided that more time is needed for consideration and investigation to establish suitable research collaboration hubs by the end of this fiscal year.

*1 Collaboration Hubs for International Research Program (CHIRP):
This program aims to promote Japan’s identifiable and continuous support in seeking long-term collaboration by developing international collaboration hubs with ASEAN countries and India, for the purpose of cooperative open-innovation that is accessible to industries and aims to provide direct solutions to locally and globally shared challenges.
