Dr. Lingkui Meng, Dr. Yasutomo Segawa and Professor Kenichiro Itami have developed a simple yet effective method for the formation of thiophene-fused π-conjugated molecules, which have great potential as organic semiconductors. Upon heating the solution of arylethynyl-substituted polycyclic arenes with elemental sulfur, the corresponding thiophene-fused arenes can be obtained. The applicability of this method was demonstrated by the efficient synthesis of the high-performance organic semiconductive molecules.
