Development of Video-Frame Atomic Force Microscopy with True Atomic Resolution in Liquid |
|
Molecular-scale understanding of biological phenomena requires direct imaging of structure and dynamics of individual biomolecules with high spatial and temporal resolution. Recent progress in frequency modulation atomic force microscopy (FM-AFM) has enabled true atomic resolution imaging even in liquids. However, this novel method does not currently have enough imaging speed to capture the dynamics of biological phenomena in real-time. In this study, we greatly improve the time response of the liquid-environment FM-AFM without sacrificing the high spatial resolution and thereby realizing atomic-resolution imaging at a video rate. This should provide a powerful means to investigate molecular-scale dynamics of biological phenomena. |
