Elucidation of molecular mechanisms that regulate stress response in metabolic syndrome and atherosclerosis
Metabolic and cardiovascular systems continuously respond to various stresses and maintain homeostasis. In obesity, the failure of stress response leads to tissue dysfunction and chronic inflammation in the metabolic tissues and blood vessels, which would culminate in metabolic syndrome and atherosclerosis. In this study, we aim to identify the alteration in metabolism that initiate destructive stress response in obesity, and to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that control stress response and chronic inflammation. Based on the results of the study, we will develop therapeutic strategies against metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease by drug discovery and siRNA technology.
