Creating Japan-US Research Highway

About the Symposium

The Japan-US Research Collaboration Week aims to accelerate research collaboration between Japan and the US particularly in the fields of science and technology. By fostering collaborations and partnerships between Japan and the United States, we can establish trust networks and build a community of diverse and highly talented researchers. These networks will be valuable assets to society and encourage innovation, especially when tackling global issues and crises. Furthermore, they will contribute to the development of the next generation of human resources, fostering peace and stability in the Pacific region.

This is a unique opportunity for new stakeholders to participate in ongoing research collaborations that are either already successful or on track for success. By learning from these collaborations, stakeholders can gain insight into the “Research Highway E which is being developed as a mechanism to accelerate research collaboration through between Japan and the US and link the research outcomes to social implementation and commercialization.

ME-BYO: Social demands and new industrial potential
Session organizer: Kanagawa Prefecture & Stanford University

Stanford University and Kanagawa Prefecture have been working together for nearly a decade to envision the next generation of medical care under the theme of "ME-BYO" a pre-symptomatic disease. We will discuss what has emerged from the Kanagawa-Stanford collaboration to date and expectations for broadening participation.

July 21 (Fri)

Science and Innovation for the resilient society
Session organizer: Kanagawa Prefecture & Stanford University

Cutting-edge activities on the development of new science and technology tracking pre-disease conditions and novel research to increase peace of mind and vitality. Expectations for the focus of future Japan-US collaborations will be presented. We will also reflect on the Japan and US efforts and achievements of the scientific community during the COVID19 pandemic.

July 22 (Sat)

Building networks of diverse and highly talented researchers
Session organizers: Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development, Japan Science and Technology Agency, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and United Japanese Researchers Around the World

In this one-day event, we aim to bring together students, researchers, and administrators from Japan and the US to foster research collaboration. Our objective is to accumulate valuable lessons from ongoing activities and engage in discussions to gain insights into effective mechanisms that facilitate cross-border collaborations among researchers, universities, and funding agencies, ultimately accelerating the pace of collaboration.

July 24 (Mon)

Cutting edge collaboration endeavor
Session organizer: Stanford University School of Medicine & Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine / Stanford University School of Engineering & Nagoya University Institute of Materials and Systems for Sustainability

Nagoya University and Stanford University showcase their on-going cutting-edge research collaborations to engage with a wider range of partners. Two examples of these collaborations include research on Next Gen technologies for micro-sampling and Next Gen materials for wide bandgap semiconductors.

July 25 (Tue)

Fostering global business growth through industry-academia collaboration
Session organizer: Stanford Laboratory for Drug, Device Development and Regulatory Science & SOZO Ventures

By extending invitations to accomplished deep-tech startup companies, successful university commercialization programs, thriving investors, and exemplary education programs, our intention is to underscore the importance of universities and startups. Additionally, we aim to engage in discussions with startups and investors regarding the emerging model of global industry-academia collaboration that is anticipated in the future. The organizers of this session envision it as the inaugural stride towards establishing an "Academia's Davos meeting" in the times to come.
