Dr. Suda’s Research Featured on NHK Educational TV program “Science ZERO”

Dr. Hiraku Suda of the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Saitama University, appeared on the July 5, 2026 broadcast of Science ZERO, titled "Even Darwin Would Be Amazed! The Remarkable Evolution of Carnivorous Plants," where he explained the fascinating trapping mechanism of the Venus flytrap.
The program featured videos visualizing calcium ion dynamics, in which the leaves fluoresce as calcium ion levels increase in response to stimulation. It explained how the trap closes only after two successive stimulations of the trigger hairs, as well as how the Venus flytrap identifies its prey by combining two types of sensors: the trigger hairs, which detect mechanical stimuli, and the glandular tissue, which senses nutrients released from captured insects.
The program also introduced our 2025 research showing that MSL10, a mechanosensitive protein located at the base of the trigger hairs, originally functions in plant defense but has been used by the Venus flytrap to capture prey, illustrating the remarkable evolutionary innovation of carnivorous plants.
The broadcast provided an accessible introduction to the sophisticated sensory system of the Venus flytrap and highlighted the remarkable abilities of plants and the cutting-edge research behind them. The ERATO TOYOTA Plant Sensory Transduction Project will continue to investigate how plants perceive environmental stimuli, transmit information throughout their tissues, and convert these signals into various responses.

You can watch the videos showing that the Venus flytrap’s leaves emit fluorescence as Ca²⁺ levels increase in response to stimulation at the link below.
