Professor Toyota and Students Featured in Asahi Shimbun for Their Research Activities

On Tuesday, April 21, 2026, our laboratory was featured in the Asahi Shimbun (Saitama edition) as part of the special series “University Spotlight,” which highlights the research and student activities of selected universities.
The interview took place on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, and included not only an interview with Professor Masatsugu Toyota but also a close look at the research activities of our students. Filming was conducted in the main laboratory, where students carry out their daily experiments, as well as in the Science Frontier Hub, a new research facility completed last year.
As part of the coverage, the reporter observed a demonstration involving “glowing Arabidopsis.” Through a microscope, they witnessed how touching a leaf with tweezers caused the stimulated area to emit green fluorescence. This phenomenon visualizes the mechanism by which plants transmit danger signals throughout their bodies using calcium ion signaling in response to external stimuli, such as insect feeding or physical contact. Professor Toyota was the first in the world to successfully visualize this mechanism, revealing how plants communicate information about external stimuli throughout their entire structure.

This feature provided a valuable opportunity to share our laboratory’s research and educational activities with a wider audience. We will continue to share our research findings and contribute to society.
