The Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) has decided the winners of the 5th Brilliant Female Researchers Award (The Jun Ashida Award). The awards ceremony was held at TELECOM CENTER BUILDING on November 19 (Sun), 2023.
At the awards ceremony JST presented a trophy and certificate to each winner, and the Ashida Fund* offered one million yen as a supplementary prize to the main winner.
*The Ashida Fund was established in 1994 by the late fashion designer Jun Ashida for the purpose of nurturing the younger generation. The Japan International Science and Technology Exchange Center (JISTEC) operates and manages the Ashida Fund on behalf of Jun Ashida Co. Ltd.

Dr. Hasegawa has produced remarkable results through her creative analyses of the formation of climate change policy and impact on food issues in agriculture and land use around the world using a simulation model she developed. In particular, her analyses are garnering attention worldwide for pointing out the negative effects of future reductions in greenhouse gas emissions on food consumption and the risk of hunger. She is active worldwide as a leading researcher in this field and serves as a Lead Author of the Working Group of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
In addition to her research, she helps train personnel who aim to become international leaders in the laboratory she supervises.

Dr. Ota has done research on maximizing communication efficiency using RIS, Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface, a special reflector used for the high frequency band (millimeter wave) that is garnering attention in next-generation communications beyond 5G/6G, and optimizing its installation locations. She also frequently takes part in joint research abroad, mainly in China and Canada.
In addition to her research activities, she served as a member of the Office for Promotion of Gender Employment Equality at her university and gave lectures on role models for female researchers both on and off campus. She has trained young female researchers at her laboratory who are now active internationally in various fields. Some of them received the Muroran Institute of Technology Director's Award, also known as the “Randake Award”.
