The immune system plays a central role in the biological defense mechanism against infection and cancer. However dysregulation of the immune system can result in inflammation leading to the onset of allergy and autoimmune diseases. Recently in the field of immunology, tremendous inroads have been made in our understanding of the various cells types and molecules regulating both the innate and acquired immune response. These new research findings greatly contribute towards the conquest of human immune disorders.
The elucidations of mechanisms that converge to coordinate immune regulation are complex and involve both organ and tissue specific innate and acquired immunity. This gfield of coordination of innate immunity and acquired immunityh involves the mucosal immune response that manifests a strong protective barrier to several immune disorders. On the other hand, the discovery of regulatory T cells, reveal the existence of negative immune regulatory mechanisms related to homeostasis. Breakdown of this regulation has been suggested to induce chronic inflammation and the onset of immune diseases.
This time, the CREST research area gEtiological basics of and techniques for treatment of allergic and autoimmune diseases (CREST eThe immune systemf for short)h brings together leading experts from all over the world to give lecture on cutting edge topics. Attendees will also receive recent findings not only from the CREST research area eThe immune systemf but also from the CREST research area gThe creation of basic medical technologies to clarify and control the mechanisms underlying chronic inflammation (CREST eChronic Inflammationf for short)h and the PRESTO research area gElucidation and control of the mechanisms underlying chronic inflammation (PRESTO eChronic Inflammationf for short)h. Through the interaction between these different research areas, it is expected to advance our understanding of the basic and clinical problems common to immune diseases and to lead to the development of novel basic medical technologies and therapeutics.
