Service Science, Solutions and Foundation Integrated Research Program [RISTEX/JST]

Activity in this focus area finished on March 31, 2017.

About Our Program

Outline of Our Program

The aim of the Service Science, Solutions and Foundation Integrated Research Program is to bring a scientific and multidisciplinary approach using data and so on to create value in onsite service systems and establish "Service Science" research infrastructure. This program started in 2010 as Japan’s Service Sciences Research and Development Program.

Program Aims

  1. Develop effective technologies and methodologies for solving the problems encountered in a range of social services in order to raise their quality and efficiency, and develop and expand new value. By accumulating extracted knowledge, create concepts, theories, technologies and methodologies for “Service Science,” and establish research infrastructure that can be applied to services in various fields in the future.
  • Scientifically verify the common components of “Service Science” and by generalization and codification, establish "Service Science" research infrastructure.
  • Utilizing research findings such as new technologies and methodologies in various services, contribute to society by solving individual problems.

  1. Promote communication and collaboration among researchers and practitioners of “Service Science” and contribute to community building.

Two Research Approaches

This program will be conducted using the two research and development models below.

Solution-Oriented Service Science Research, Type A

Develop technologies and methodologies for solving problems relating to specific services, and in addition to solving the problems, aim to ensure that the technologies and methodologies derived in this way contribute to the establishment of "Service Science" research infrastructure.

Foundation-Oriented Service Science Research, Type B

Focus on the research elements (service consumer behavior, service evaluation, explicit knowledge, marketing science etc.), and codify them by creating and accumulating new knowledge to establish "Service Science" research infrastructure. Aim to ensure that the knowledge is applied to solve various onsite problems in the future in order to contribute to improving the quality and efficiency of services and create new value.

Two subtypes have been set up under Type B (Foundation-Oriented Service Science Research) since 2011; subtype B1 (Combination of Humanities and Sciences) and B2 (Arts and Social Sciences), with approaches focusing on the combination between Humanities and Sciences, and on Arts and Social Sciences, respectively.
Budget sizes differ between B1 and B2, while other conditions, such as the subjects, the objectives and the period of research, are common.

Two Research Approaches :A) Solution-Oriented Service Science Research and B) Foundation-Oriented Service Science Research

Through research approach A, accumulate findings such as technologies and methodologies that are effective for solving problems related to specific services, and from there contribute to building research infrastructure by extracting and integrating knowledge that can be deployed in other fields. On the other hand, with research approach B, the scientific concepts, theories, technologies and methodologies of "Service Science" are created, and besides contributing to building a service science platform, they also contribute to solving problems when they are applied to problem-solving in a range of fields.
The problem-solving of A and the creation of scientific concepts, theories, technologies and methodologies of B will have a complementary effect, while generalizing and codifying the research elements of "Service Science" should lead to progress in building a platform.

Multidisciplinarity is required for both type A and B.
In addition, we recommend approaches focusing on the combination between Humanities and Sciences for type A (Solution-Oriented Service Science Research) and subtype B1 (Foundation-Oriented Service Science Research Combination of Humanities and Sciences).
With regard to subtype B2 (Arts and Social Sciences), we recommend approaches focusing on Art and Social Sciences.
