The opening ceremony for the “M2Smart” testbed* was held in Hyderabad, India on May 28, 2019. The testbed is to be used for the project “M2Smart” (“Smart Cities Development for Emerging Countries by Multimodal Transport System Based on Sensing, Network and Big Data Analysis of Regional Transportation”. Principal Investigator: Project leader Tsutomu Tsuboi, Nagoya Electric Works Co., Ltd.) as part of SATREPS (Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development) program. Ms. Yoshiko Shirokizawa, an executive director of JST, and Mr. Mitsuyuki Ueda, Director, International Science and Technology Affairs Division, Science and Technology Policy Bureau, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology took part. Approximately twenty local media outlets covered the opening or the project's activities, indicating increased interest in this project in India.

* Testbed: A platform that performs verification under conditions that are close to those of the actual operating environment. The testbed is used for intelligent transportation system research.

Part of media coverage

As its economy has developed, India has seen an increase in traffic, causing social problems such as air pollution and frequent traffic accidents. This project aims to urge people to shift from using personal cars to using public transportation such as buses and metro lines and disperse traffic congestion. To achieve these aims, it will determine urban traffic conditions by analyzing big data collected with the latest sensing technologies, send data about optimal routes to residents' smartphones, and control traffic signals and road information boards.

This project, which contributes to low-carbon, low-energy smart cities by optimizing traffic conditions, is also expected to contribute to two United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 9 “Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation” and Goal 11 “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.”
