JST, the Engineering Academy of Japan (EAJ) and the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE) held the 2008 Japan- America Frontiers of Engineering Symposium (JAFOE) jointly between 17th and 19th November, 2008, in Kobe, Japan.
The aim of this symposium is to provide a place where Japanese and American young researchers can find new possibilities in their research and development to foster interdisciplinary research. Through extensive discussions on latest R&D topics and relating issues, JAFOE enhances joint researches and interdisciplinary technology transfers, and nurtures a network among new leaders of the next generation.
Opening remarks were given by Prof. George Bugliarello, the foreign secretary of NAE. In main sessions, researchers from both countires held cross-disciplinary discussion lively on the 4 themes, "Advances in Automation and Instrumentation for Biotechnology and Health Care", "The Future of Sequence Modeling: A Peek into Modern Spech/Language Technology", "Alternative Energy" and "Advanced Sensor Technology".
