2008 Japan-America Frontiers of Engineering Symposium

"The 2008 Japan-America Frontiers of Engineering Symposium" (JAFOE) was held jointly by JST, the Engineering Academy of Japan (EAJ) and the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE). Young researchers in engineering from Japan and the U.S. gathered in Kobe and discussed lively in cross-disciplinary approaches.

JST, the Engineering Academy of Japan (EAJ) and the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE) held the 2008 Japan- America Frontiers of Engineering Symposium (JAFOE) jointly between 17th and 19th November, 2008, in Kobe, Japan.
The aim of this symposium is to provide a place where Japanese and American young researchers can find new possibilities in their research and development to foster interdisciplinary research. Through extensive discussions on latest R&D topics and relating issues, JAFOE enhances joint researches and interdisciplinary technology transfers, and nurtures a network among new leaders of the next generation.
Opening remarks were given by Prof. George Bugliarello, the foreign secretary of NAE. In main sessions, researchers from both countires held cross-disciplinary discussion lively on the 4 themes, "Advances in Automation and Instrumentation for Biotechnology and Health Care", "The Future of Sequence Modeling: A Peek into Modern Spech/Language Technology", "Alternative Energy" and "Advanced Sensor Technology".
