Researchers Theme Outline
Information technologies have effected changes in daily interactions for deaf people in Japan. For instance, text-messaging services of pocket beeper and mobile phone allow them to go out freely without waiting for fax responses in their houses. With the development of telecommunication technologies, it's expected to increase the opportunities that they participate in social activities using their mother tongue, namely Japanese Sign Language (JSL). The goals of this research project are (1) building up a cooperative information environment in which deaf people and hearing people can discuss together in equality, and (2) formulating guideline for organizing this environment in a way that makes it useful for everyone.
