JST announces 10 new SATREPS projects for FY2013
—Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development program combines international joint research with official development assistance (ODA)—

Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) announced the new projects provisionally selected*1 for the Fiscal Year 2013 Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) program.

SATREPS is a science and technology diplomacy initiative that promotes international joint research using advanced science and technology from Japan in combination with official development assistance (ODA). The program is a collaboration between JST and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). SATREPS is based on the needs of developing countries, entailing promotion of international joint research targeting global issues and envisaging future adoption of research outcomes into society. Such international joint research will not only acquire new scientific knowledge leading to resolution of global issues but also address the research and development capacity, contributing to the sustained research activities in developing countries.

For FY2013, JST called for project proposals from researchers in Japan in four research areas ─ Environment/Energy, Bioresources, Natural Disaster Prevention and Infectious Diseases Control ─ and also, Interdisciplinary projects*2. A total of 98 proposals was received. Through a peer-review process, 10 new projects were provisionally selected, comprising 7 projects collaborating with Asian researchers, 1 with African researchers, and 2 with Central and South American researchers.

*1 Provisional selection:
For each of these provisionally selected projects, a “Record of Discussions (R/D)” must be signed to confirm agreement between the research counterpart(s) in the developing country and JICA on the details of technical cooperation. As a result of this process, the research project title and research term for the provisionally selected project might be modified or the project itself might be terminated.
*2 Interdisciplinary projects:
In the past, applicants were not allowed to apply under multiple areas for proposals extending over more than one field of research or which did not fit clearly into a specific field. Starting with FY2012, the application (form 1) allows applicants to select more than one field. Such applications are considered as Interdisciplinary field projects.
