1) Type1

Project Title Overseas Research Teams Research Project Abstract
Japanese Research Team
Sustainable Management of Agro-ecological Resources for Tribal Societies 2 (SMARTS2) Catherine Chan-Halbrendt (Lead PI), Professor and Chair, Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management, University of Hawaii Pravat Kumar Roul (Indian co-PI), Director, Directorate of Polytechnic, Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology Wim Van der Putten (Dutch co-PI), Professor, Department of Plant Sciences, Wageningen University Steven Gray (American co-PI), Assistant Professor, School for the Environment, University of Massachusetts We propose to demonstrate how conservation agriculture, technology, and fore-knowledge of climate variation (e.g. water availability) can be integrated with small landholder farmers' existing knowledge and behaviors to increase adaptation to climate change. The Japan team will investigate local knowledge such as stock-holding, multi-crop farming and traditional food storage equipment and incorporates it into the CAPS (Conservation Agricultural Production System) to improve it. The Japan team will also evaluate the CAPS program. The US and Holland team will design and develop the CAPS as well as analyze soil resilience and ecology. The US team will examine the stakeholders’ behavior using cognitive mapping and will also analyze the food demand market in local and urban areas. The India team will collaborate on all research activities including experimental culture as well as leading the participatory CAPS promotion program. Researchers from 4 nations will collaborate in a mutually complementary manner. We can validate the participatory CAPS program from a multidisciplinary perspective and also propose a novel rural development program internationally.

Project Title Overseas Research Teams Research Project Abstract
Japanese Research Team
Food Security Impacts of Industrial Crop Expansion in Sub-Sahara Africa (FICESSA) Anna Locke (UK co-PI), Director, Agricultural Development and Policy Programme, Overseas Development Institute Katherine J. Willis (UK co-PI), Director of Science, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and Professor, Department of Zoology, University of Oxford, U.K. Graham von Maltitz (South Africa co-PI), Senior Researcher, Natural Resources and the Environment (NRE), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) FICESSA is a highly interdisciplinary project that will study how industrial crops compete for land with food crops in Sub-Sahara Africa, and will identify the food security outcomes of this competition. Our consortium consists of partners with strengths in academic (University of Tokyo), applied (Kew Gardens, CSIR) and policy-driven research (United Nations University, Overseas Development Institute). The Japanese researchers will be responsible for elucidating the local food security outcomes of industrial crop expansion through case studies in Ghana, Malawi, Mozambique and Swaziland. The Japanese team will also design a dissemination and capacity building strategy for the effective communication of our findings to different stakeholders. This joint work will build a state-of-the-art understanding of the food security outcomes of industrial crop expansion in Sub-Sahara Africa. We also expect to produce numerous policy-relevant finding that will be disseminated to policy-makers, local communities, NGOs and the private sector.
Alexandros Gasparatos (Lead PI), Associate Professor, Integrated Research System for Sustainability Science (IR3S), University of Tokyo Kazuhiko Takeuchi (co-PI), Senior Vice-Rector, United Nations University
