A novel mechanism in the activation of immune cells during inflammatory bowel disease

Extracellular ATP induced activation of P2X7 receptor-expressing intestinal mast cells and caused the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease. These findings strongly suggest that P2X7 receptor-dependent intestinal mast cell activation could be a novel target for the treatment of intestinal inflammation.
