Designing and evaluating social systems for making the transition towards a low carbon society

Analyzing and redesigning city structures to realize a vigorous and affluent low carbon society

Using statistical and actual data on cities, we will develop three types of draft urban structure models for inter-city cooperation in metropolitan areas (populations over one million), regional urban centers (populations around 300,000), and mid and small sized regional cities (populations less than 100,000).

In creating draft urban structure models, we will consider such factors as population, size, population density, division of land use (city, agricultural or mountains and forests), industrial structure and traffic environment. Through the development of these urban models, we will consider the effects and problems of compact city structures, the distribution of urban facilities for using renewable energy, and low carbon activities for senior citizens in surplus buildings resulting from the decline in population.
