Research on regional low carbon society development

We will create a database of global warming countermeasures adopted by Japan's local governments and information on national subsidy programs. All initiatives will be disclosed to the public to allow comparison of project costs with CO2 reduction results. This will allow anyone to obtain information on global warming countermeasures carried out in Japan and evaluate their cost effectiveness. In addition, we will also analyze the status of deployment and strategies for promoting solar water heating systems and solar power generation systems that take into account regional characteristics. We also aim to analyze the financial aspect of biomass energy projects utilizing livestock waste and other biomass materials.

Research outline

The Act on Promotion of Global Warming Countermeasures was amended in 2002 to make local governments responsible for planning and implementing programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In 2009, 13 cities undertaking proactive measures against global warming were selected as Eco-model Cities, reflecting the spread of efforts to reduce CO2 emissions throughout Japan.

Regional efforts to tackle global warming are supported by the national government in various ways. However, because of a lack of organization in presenting this information, it is difficult to compare or evaluate the results of such efforts.
Accordingly, we decided to create a database of all such regional initiatives. Our aim is to provide a platform for evaluating countermeasures, especially in terms of their regional compatibility, by promoting data analysis, organization and reuse.

CO2 reductions and incentives in smart communities

Objectives
  • To quantify the effect of installing solar power generators and charging stations in stores and service stations, and EV car sharing in reducing CO2 emissions in smart cities.
  • To evaluate the possibility of an autonomous emissions trading scheme that involves stores, charging stations and vehicles.
  • To publish the above research results at meetings of the Japan Society of Energy and Resources and other academic societies, and on the Web.
Research outline

Our aim is to quantify the effect of CO2 reduction projects in domestic smart communities and to consider possible policies and mechanisms that can be applied to provide an economic incentive for promoting such projects.

Promoting the use of solar energy in regional communities

Objectives

To analyze and confirm the status of deployment and strategies for promoting solar water heating systems and solar power generation systems that take into account regional characteristics and housing structure types.

Research outline

In order to study strategies for promoting solar water heating systems and solar power generation systems, we first analyzed the status of deployment in each region.
The next step will be to clarify the current deployment structure and present strategies for promoting further installation by analyzing regional characteristics, (amount of solar radiation), type of housing (ownership, age, structure, area, etc.), deployment status of solar water heating systems and solar power generation systems, and scale of intention to install.

Analyzing the investment thresholds of livestock based biomass energy projects

Objectives

To clarify the financial structure of biomass energy projects by analyzing investment thresholds.

Research outline

Biomass energy is produced from livestock manure and similar materials. The use of biomass energy depends on the type of fuel, the scale of the project and the biomass technologies involved. We will therefore analyze the current situation and provide guidelines to serve as a standard for decisions on investment in various technologies. This will involve organizing and analyzing the progress made in introducing biomass energy (types of fuel, project scale, and technologies used), and analyzing the financial aspects of applying biomass energy technologies and the investment threshold.
