Tanaka was involved in the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) process for the Third, Fourth and Fifth Assessment Reports. Tanaka was a co-recipient of the 2007 Novel Peace Prize as a Lead Author for the IPCC.

As an analyst in the IEA, she executed analysis on energy efficiency policy for industry under G8 Gleneagles Action Plan and provided policy recommendation to G8 summit (2007 Heiligendamm Summit and 2008 Hokkaido-Toya Summit). She also initiated and developed a new project, Energy Management Action Network(EMAK).

At LCS-JST, Tanaka had taken a major role in research management for electricity saving program especially at residential sector, corresponding to electricity crisis after the Great East Japan Earthquake, together with several municipal governments, including development a new inter-community network. The project continues now for broader objective — climate change mitigation — though energy saving at residential sector, and includes measurement of electricity consumption, detailed analysis and proposals for municipal policy.

Tanaka is also engaged in the international strategy research and published policy proposals on technology transfer for climate change mitigation, which focuses on the international technology cooperation between developed countries and developing countries. The proposals includes both a new concept of national mitigation strategy for developed countries through such cooperation to contribute the countries' mitigation efforts and technological innovation, and sustainable development strategy at developing countries, under/beyond UN framework.
