Because the neurons are the functional units of a neural network, large-scale recordings from them are indispensable for our understanding of the brain function.

In this study, I use a new calcium imaging technique to monitor activities of hundreds of neurons with high spatial resolution and reconstruct huge spike trains of a neuronal microcircuit.

In the cortex and hippocampus, I examine how neural signals are modulated or stored while being conveyed through multisynaptic pathways and how they are converted to an appropriate output, and thereby, I elucidate the operational fashion and computational function of a cortical microcircuit.
