Bacterial persistence and primitive phenotypic adaptation

Bacterial persistence is an epigenetic phenomenon in which a subset of cells in a clonal population shows phenotypic tolerance to deleterious stresses such as antibiotic drugs. The phenomenon is known to occur for many kinds of stress. This study aims to understand the basic mechanisms underlying bacterial persistence, especially focusing on the role of stochastic gene expression.
