Outline

Dihydrogen (molecular hydrogen) has been expected as a viable clean energy source for the next generation because it does not emit CO2 when generating power. Hydrogenase is a bacterial enzyme, which catalyzes reversible oxidation/reduction of dihydrogen/protons. Our structural studies on three types of [NiFe] hydrogenases will unveil the structural basis of the molecular mechanism of the enzymatic reaction and provide further insights for development of new bio-fuel cells and dihydrogen-producing systems.
