iPS Network

Message from the Chairman, Steering Committee

Shinya Yamanaka Chairman of the Steering Committee of MEXT iPS Cell Research Network

Since the first creation of iPS cells in 2006, a number of scientists around the world have been and are being involved in research to develop iPS cell technology. In Japan, the iPS Cell Research Network was built in 2008– that is a research promotion system at a national level that allows the network members to share research information and outcome materials that are essential for promoting research.

The iPS Cell Research Network has more and more in number of registered members, both research organizations and researchers, to widen its circle.

Currently, there are many patients suffering from diseases for which no effective treatment has yet been developed. We are committed to research on iPS cell technology to develop its clinical applications in the nearest future, to help these patients. Our efforts include pathological studies and new drug screening, by making the most of disease-specific iPS cells obtained using patients' cells. In a longer term, it is expected that the technology will be applied to cell transplantation therapy in the framework of regenerative medicine. To achieve these goals, it is essential to organize an all-Japan R & D system beyond the existing frameworks and borders, by encouraging participation of industries and involving different ministries. The activities of iPS Cell Research Network play a key role in developing such an R&D system. We are devoting all our efforts to smoothly advance iPS cell research in Japan. All your support and cooperation will always be welcome.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) is strategically promoting Japan's iPS(induced pluripotent stem) cell research at a national level, by setting the "Total Strategy for the Acceleration of iPS Cell Research". In this framework, the "iPS Cell Research Network" was built in April 2008, constituting an all-Japan research promotion system comprising the research organizations and scientists involved in the projects for iPS cell research supported by MEXT and Cabinet Office, Government of Japan.

This network is designed to accelerate and promote iPS cell research in a comprehensive manner, by allowing more than 700 scientists involved in the following five projects to share the latest research information, intellectual property rights, and outcome materials, according to the common rules stipulated in the "Rules and Regulations of iPS Cell Research Network".
