General Description of the Research Project Focusing on blue carbon, which is biological carbon sequestrated in coastal-marine ecosystems, in the Philippines and Indonesia located in the Coral Triangle as the world center of biodiversity, the BlueCARES project aims at establishing and proposing ‘Blue Carbon Strategy’ as an effective scheme for enhancing local efforts to conserve coastal ecosystems and improve their resilience and thereby for contributing to mitigation of global warming. For this purpose, comprehensive surveys will be conducted for clarifying spatial distribution of blue carbon stocks and various fluxes governing the blue carbon dynamics in coastal ecosystems of both countries. The survey results will be utilized for developing an integrated model system on material cycle, carbon dynamics, ecosystem responses under various environmental stresses, etc. The Blue Carbon Strategy will be established based on the results of the various surveys including comprehensive assessment of blue carbon ecosystem services and the prediction analysis for various future scenarios using the model system combined with socio-economic parameters.
