Overview of the Research Project

Elucidation of blue carbon dynamics and assessment of ecosystem services based on new methodologies and framework
Focusing on blue carbon, which is biological carbon sequestrated by coastal-marine ecosystems, in the Philippines and Indonesia located in the Coral Triangle as the world center of biodiversity, this project aims to evaluate and predict the functions and dynamics of the blue carbon ecosystems for the carbon capture and sequestration. For this purpose, we will develop an innovative and integrated monitoring/modeling system and carry out the comprehensive assessment of blue carbon ecosystem services. In addition, a “core-and-network” system will be built for sustainable nation-wide network-based monitoring and associated human resource development.

Establish and propose “Blue Carbon Strategy” and develop a framework for its implementation
Based on various surveys, model system development and analyses, the project will establish and propose “Blue Carbon Strategy”, with its effective implementation scheme arrangement, as a local-global integrated
