Individual cells of multicellular organisms communicate with neighboring cells to maintain the organism. Each cell in a multicellular organism learns its role in the cell population through dynamic and intricate communication with surrounding and distant cells called "holonic communication". Plants are excellent models because they do not have central regulation system like central nervous system and because their developmental processes are basically based on holonic communication. In this project, we selected plants as experimental models to study holonic communication especially in plant reproduction. We set up three research groups for nano-engineering technology, optical technology, and single-cell omics to achieve true interdisciplinary researches. Our project progressed considerably to establish live-cell biology field aiming "with complete control under the microscope". Many new phenomena representative of holonic communication were discovered as well as key molecules involved in holonic communication among cells, tissues, and organs of plants.
