A novel X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) system which enables to perform a measurement at solid/liquid interface under electrochemical condition is developed and utilized to investigate the oxygen reduction reaction mechanism at cathode electrodes for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells and Li-air batteries. Based on understanding of the reaction mechanism, sophisticated cathode electrodes with high electrocatalytic activity are designed.
