Session 9 March 26, 2014 at Tokyo Headquarters (K’s Gobancho)

The President gave a brief description of major programs that started running in the current fiscal year.

Then, Dr. FURUICHI Kiyoshi (Director of Research and Development in life innovation area) explained the state in R&D on three-dimensional reconstruction of organs and others. Dr. NISHINAKAMURA Ryuichi (Professor at Kumamoto University) also gave a lecture titled “in-vitro organogenesis of kidney.”

Session 8 February 19, 2014 at Tokyo Headquarters (K’s Gobancho)

The President gave descriptions of the ACCEL program, and a new program, “JST’s Support for Venture Companies,” which starts in the coming fiscal year.

Then, Dr. NODA Susumu (Professor, Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University) gave a lecture titled “Photonic Crystal Laser—a Highly Advanced Technology: Dreaming About Freely Controlling Brightness“ derived from “Photonic Crystal Surface-Emitting Semiconductor Laser—Towards Realization of High Power and High Brightness Operation,” which was selected as a new research project in ACCEL last December, and Dr. YAGI Shigenori (Program Manager on this project) also gave a lecture titled “'Monozukuri Nippon,' a Key Way to Recover from the Brink of Defeat—Photonic Crystal Laser.”

Session 7 January 22, 2014 at Tokyo Headquarters (K’s Gobancho)

The President gave his New Year’s resolutions. Mr. KURASAWA Haruo (Deputy Director at JST-CRCC) also introduced one of its new activities for fiscal 2014. Dr. SOMEYA Takao (Professor, School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, Research Director of ERATO Someya Bio-Harmonized Electronics Project) gave a lecture titled “The potential for soft and lightweight electronic materials—covering e-skins for robots and healthcare sensors.”

Session 6 November 20, 2013 at Tokyo Headquarters (K’s Gobancho)

The President gave a brief description of “JST’s commitments” and “ALCA project” in the light of the fact that two years have passed since he assumed the position as President. Dr. AIKA Kenichi (Emeritus Professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology, Program Director in ALCA) gave a lecture titled “Keys to the renewable energy society: energy carriers” and Dr. EGUCHI Koichi (Professor at Kyoto University, Program Officer in ALCA) “Development of fuel cells utilizing ammonia in the project of energy carriers.”

Session 5 September 19, 2013 at Tokyo Headquarters (K’s Gobancho)

The President gave a brief description of “Element Strategy” and the JST’s “Space and Gap” in the field of Nanotechnology and Materials. Then, Dr. KITAGAWA Susumu (Professor, iCeMS, Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences, Kyoto University, Research Director, the ERATO’s “KITAGAWA Integrated Pores”) gave a lecture titled “Gaseous science and technology using PCPs,” and Dr. FUJITA Makoto (Professor, Department of Applied Chemistry, School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo) “Innovative Single Crystal X-ray analysis using crystalline sponges eliminating the need for crystallization of samples.”

The President gave a brief description of “JST’s approaches towards infectious diseases.”

Then, Dr. KAWAOKA Yoshihiro (Professor, Institute of Medical Science University of Tokyo, Research Director, “KAWAOKA Infection-induced Host Responses” of ERATO) gave a lecture titled “For the purpose of eradicating infectious diseases.”

Session 3 June 12, 2013 at Tokyo Headquarters (K’s Gobancho)

The President gave a brief description of the Center for Research and Development Strategy (CRDS) and Mr. UETA Shushi (Deputy Director-General, CRDS) explained the CRDS proposal process and the outline of the “Panoramic View Report of Research and Development.”

Then, based on the “Panoramic View Report of Research and Development” CRDS has published, Mr. KASAGI Nobuhide (Principal Fellow, Environment and Energy Unit, CRDS) gave a presentation on the R&D trends in the Environment and Energy field and Mr. IWANO Kazuo (Principal Fellow, Electronics, Information and Communication Unit, CRDS) in the Electronics, Information and Communication field.

Session 2 - May 16, 2013 at Tokyo Headquarters (K’s Gobancho)

In this session, the President announced the inauguration of the Japan Junior High School Science Championships planned in December 2013, and explained one of the FY 2013 key initiatives “Innovation in drug discovery and diagnosis technology based on metabolism analysis.”

Then, there were two lectures presented as follows:
“’Cancer Metabolism’ being revealed by imaging mass spectrometry” by Dr. SUEMATSU Makoto (Professor, School of Medicine, Keio University)
“Development of imaging mass spectrometry” by Mr. OGAWA Kiyoshi (General Manager, Shimadzu Corporation)

This time, the President’s presentation included the following topics:
1) Introduction of new research areas and their respective research supervisors
2) Creation of innovation through harnessing big data
3) R&D initiatives concerning the avian influenza A (H7N9) virus in China

Then, Dr. ISHIKAWA Masatoshi (Professor, Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, The University of Tokyo) gave a lecture titled “Future values to be defined by society Seeking a new model for forwarding science and technology.”
